THE UST Junior Golden Tigresses will clash with the Nazareth School of National University in a playoff for the second seed after a three-way tie emerged following the conclusion of the UAAP Season 86 girls’ volleyball tournament elimination round.

The playoff, of which the winner is assured of a podium finish, is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 12 noon, at the Adamson University Gymnasium. The loser of the clash will face the fourth-seeded FEU Diliman to kickstart the stepladder semifinals.

UST, NSNU and Far Eastern University-Diliman capped the two-round eliminations with identical 8-4 records.

Usually, in case of three-way ties, the team with the best head-to-head record is crowned with the best seeding, while the other teams will play an extra game to determine the second-best seeding.

Based on the point differential system the league employs, NSNU (26 points) overtook UST and FEU, which garnered 24 points each. UST (2.72) overtook FEU-D (2.00) via the quotient rule, which is calculated by dividing the number of sets won by the number of sets lost.

The league announced in a resolution that FEU-D will enter the semifinals with the No. 4 seed, and a playoff will be in force to break the tie between UST and NSNU.

Adamson University will head straight into the finals after sweeping the 12-game  elimination round, activating a stepladder semifinals.

Last Saturday, the Tigresses dropped their elimination-round capper in a five-set thriller against the defending champion Lady Bullpups. In the first round of the eliminations, UST crushed the Lady Bullpups in straight sets. Emmanuel John B. Abris
