ERRORS plagued the UST Golden Spikers as they yielded to the DLSU Green Spikers in four sets, 26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15, in the UAAP Season 86 men’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, Feb. 25.

UST committed 40 errors, the most by any team this season.

“Iyan ‘yong isang bagay na we will work out, ‘yong gigil factor ng mga players,” UST assistant coach Benjamin Mape said postgame. “Eventually, ‘yung errors namin ‘yung isa sa mga nakapagbigay ng maraming puntos sa La Salle.”

UST committed 15 errors in the first frame alone. Four UST errors late in the set allowed the Green Spikers to draw first blood, 26-24.

UST weathered a right ankle injury to Gboy de Vega and a late DLSU run to tie the game at one set apiece, 25-23.

DLSU capitalized on UST errors, with its final three points in its third-set win coming from errors by Josh Ybañez.

With DLSU ahead by eight, 23-15, a block point by Billie Anima and an attack error by Sherwin Umandal punctuated the win.

Ybañez was the only UST player in double digits, scoring 18 points. De Vega scored eight points before he left with the injury.

“We’re planning to speed up the recovery of Gboy para sa fourth game namin makalaro na siya,” Mape said. “Pero as of now naman sprain lang ‘yon e. Kaya lang talagang medyo bad ‘yung pagkaka-step niya sa teammate (Flor) niya.”

Noel Kampton paced the Green Spikers with 18 markers, while JM Ronquillo and Vince Maglinao chipped in 16 markers apiece.

The UST Golden Spikers will next face the FEU Tamaraws at the same venue on March 3, Sunday, at 12 p.m. Brenn Allen L. Flores
