UST ROOKIE Angeline Poyos towed the Golden Tigresses to their fifth straight win, crushing the Ateneo Blue Eagles in straight sets, 25-19, 25-16, 25-19, in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday, Mach 9.

Poyos scored 26 markers built on 21 attacks, three aces and two blocks. This marked her best output in the season so far.

“Lahat talaga nagtrabaho and lahat nag-contribute. Well-distrubuted ‘yung bola kaya kami nanalo,” she said postgame. “Marami pa akong need ma-improve lalo na sa pasa. With the help of the coaches, magagawa ko ‘yon.”

In the first frame, Poyos scored 11 points, which accounted for almost half of her 26-point performance. She opened the game sizzling hot, converting seven out of eight UST points in the first set.

The Tigresses drew first blood with a 25-19 set win.

UST continued to display its dominance in the second set, capitalizing on 12 attack points to mount a 15-5 lead before the Tigresses turned it into a 25-16 victory for a two-sets-to-none advantage.

With Ateneo down by seven, 13-6, the Blue Eagles tied the game at 15-all behind a 9-2 run. However, the Tigresses came back to their senses and buried Ateneo with a game-sealing 10-4 run capped by a Poyos off-the-block kill, 25-19.

UST remained unscathed with a 5-0 win-loss record, while Ateneo dropped to a 1-4 tally.

Ateneo only had nine excellent sets out of its 115 total attempts, while UST tallied 19 out of 102. UST’s playmaker Cassie Carballo recorded 18 excellent sets.

Regina Jurado posted a double-double performance of 12 points and 10 excellent digs.

Lyann de Guzman led the Blue Eagles with 11 points. She was the lone Ateneo player who scored in double digits.

The Golden Tigresses will next face the UP Fighting Maroons on March 13, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. The league has yet to announce the venue.
