The UST Golden Spikers ended their three-game losing streak after overpowering the winless UP Fighting Maroons in straight sets, 25-23, 25-14, 25-16, in the UAAP Season 86 men’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday, March 13.

In notching their third win in six games, the Golden Spikers committed only 15 errors, their fewest in a game this season.

Josh Ybañez led the way for UST with 21 points, while Rainier Flor and Gboy De Vega added 11 and eight markers, respectively. Setter Dux Yambao had five points.

Ybañez scored 10 points in UST’s 25-23 first-set victory.

The Golden Spikers scored five straight points to open the second set and mounted a 19-8 lead before a Sherwin Umandal crosscourt kill gave UST a 2-0 advantage in the game.

Leading by three, 14-11, the Golden Spikers went on a game-sealing 11-5 run to record their first win in four games.

Louis Gamban scored 13 points for the Fighting Maroons who remained winless in six games.

The Golden Spikers will face Adamson University in their final game before the second round. The game is scheduled for noon on Saturday, March 16, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
