CBCP head joins Dominican order

June 15, 2015, 11:00 a.m. - THE HEAD of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is now a member of the Dominican Clerical Fraternity of the Philippines (DCFP).

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, CBCP president, received the habit of Saint Dominic during the vespers of the Dominican Community of Manaoag last June 12 at the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of Manaoag in Pangasinan. Fr. Gerard Timoner, O.P., prior provincial, led the celebration.

Villegas considered it a blessing to be part of the Dominican order.

Dominican Shrine of Manaoag proclaimed a minor basilica

THE SHRINE of Our Lady of Manaoag, the Dominican pilgrimage site in the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan, was formally proclaimed a minor basilica last Feb. 17.

The proclamation rites were led by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Cardinal Quevedo, Manila Archbishop Emeritus Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines Giusseppe Pinto, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, and 60 bishops.

It was on Oct. 11, 2014 when Villegas announced on Facebook that Pope Francis had elevated the historic shrine to a minor basilica.

It’s official: UST to host Pope Francis

UST WILL once again open its doors to the Supreme Pontiff as Pope Francis is set for two key activities on campus during his much-awaited visit to the Philippines on Jan. 15 to 19, 2015.

This will be the fourth time that UST will be graced by a papal visit.

The last pontiff to visit the school was Pope St. John Paul II, who did so on Jan. 13, 1995 as part of the World Youth Day celebrations, and on Feb. 18, 1981 when he came to Manila for the beatification of St. Lorenzo Ruiz.

Bishop Leopoldo Jaucian, chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Youth (CBCP-ECY), called on young Filipinos to reflect on the real essence of the Pope’s visit, which is to live and share God’s “mercy and compassion.”

Pope’s encounter with youth in UST ‘not just for Thomasians’

Nov. 28, 2014, 9:52 a.m. - POPE Francis' meeting with the youth in Asia's oldest university on Jan. 18 will be open to all, not just Thomasians.

Bishop Leopoldo Jaucian, chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines—Episcopal Commission on Youth (CBCP-ECY), said the gathering in the Pontifical University would be for the whole Church, especially Catholic youth.

“We are happy that UST accepted to be venue of this youth encounter. But this is not merely for Thomasians," he told the Varsitarian. "This is open for everyone, but with special prioritization for the youth.”

The UST parade ground will however be reserved for pre-selected participants from youth ministries of dioceses across the nation, which the ECY will determine.

Pope Francis to meet religious leaders, youth in UST on Jan. 18, 2015

Nov. 15, 2014, 11:16 a.m. - POPE Francis will visit the University of Santo Tomas, the only Pontifical university in Asia, on Jan. 18, 2015 to meet with religious leaders and the youth.

In a press conference held Friday evening at the Arsobizpado de Manila, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle formally announced the official itinerary of the papal visit on Jan. 15 to 19, 2015.

Pope elevates Dominican Shrine of Our Lady of Manaoag to ‘minor basilica’

Oct. 14, 2014, 2:09 p.m. - THE  SHRINE of Our Lady of Manaoag, which is under the spiritual leadership of the Filipino Dominicans in the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan, is now a minor basilica.

In a Facebook message posted yesterday, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines President Archbishop Socrates Villegas announced that Pope Francis had granted the title “minor basilica” to the shrine.

“The Archdiocese of Lingayen Dagupan is immensely blessed!” Villegas said on his Facebook page.
