UST to offer classes online

HIGH-tech quality education takes a leap forward with the introduction of the Electronic Learning Access Program (e-LeAP).

A brainchild of the UST Educational Technology Center (Ed-Tech), e-LeAP aims to integrate the media and Information Communication Technology (ICT) into the teaching and learning processes of the University.

It was Blackboard, a Learning Management System used by different schools and universities abroad which is designed to transform the Internet into a powerful environment conducive to learning.

UST JPIA honored during convention

THE UST-Junior Philippines Institute of Accountants (JPIA) was recognized as one of the outstanding JPIA chapters in the country during the group’s annual convention last April 20 to May 2 at the Barcelona Asturias Hotel in Puerto Princesa.

Outgoing UST-JPIA President Aileen Cortez said they received the award because of their outstanding performance in University activities.

Publishing house offers 10% discount

TO EASE the financial burden on the students, the UST Publishing House (USTPH) will give a 10 percent discount on the textbooks it has published.

“This is the time when parents have many expenses, thus the time when discounts would be highly appreciated by the students,” USTPH director Dr. Micheline Manalastas told the Varsitarian.

Manalastas said booths will be set up in the different buildings to make it easier for the students to purchase the books. The discount period will be from June 9 to June 30. Richard L. Rodriguez

PAAO holds youth workshop

TO PROMOTE knowledge and appreciation of sports and the arts, the UST Public Affairs and Alumni Office (PAAO), Office for Community Development, College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD), and the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) held the 5th Summer Arts Workshop and Sports Clinic with the theme “Youth for Peace” last May 6 to 9 in the municipalities of Ferrol, Odiongan, and Looc in Tablas Island, Romblon.

“We were really much welcomed and the people from those provinces were very appreciative,” PAAO director Anna Maria Gloria Ward said.

Musical nostalgia

INTRAMUROS served as the perfect backdrop for a night of classic Filipino music presented by the Kasarinlan Ensemble last May 3 at the Pueblo Pilipino Clamshell Tent.

The walled city, with its bright lights and nostalgic ambience, sparkled with culture as soaring voices and orchestrations serenaded the crowd. Folk songs, zarzuela, and a few pop ditties by seasoned composers Ernani Cuenco, Santiago Suarez, Manuel Velez, Leon Ignacio, Fulgencio Tolentino, Louie Ocampo, Gary Granada and Felipe Padilla De Leon faithfully portrayed the Filipino spirit.

A grand celebration of Philippine culture

ROXAS Boulevard promenaders were delighted last May 3 as the famous stretch became a constellation of celebration of culture in the archipelago.

Dubbed as the “Philippines’ grandest fiesta”, Aliwan 2003 featured the champions of 22 local festivals nationwide. The participants came in colorful, elaborate costumes and impressively designed floats—all competing for a total of P3 million in cash prizes in three categories: best dance parade, best float, and the Reyna ng Aliwan beauty contest.

Legacies on canvas

A RETROSPECTIVE exhibit introduces the public to Jose S. Pardo, a little known Thomasian artist and former dean of the College of Architecture and Fine Arts who was one of the country’s pioneer modernists.

Through the Ateneo Art Gallery and the Avellana Art Gallery, the exhibit Jose S. Pardo In Line With Modernism is running until May 30 at the Ateneo Art Gallery.

IN AN eventful and colorful life cut short by cancer, artist Butch Clarin Soriano not only made his mark on the canvas; he also made his mark in the hearts of many aspiring young artists who took free art lessons from him.

Soriano, who graduated at the old College of Architecture and Fine Arts where he later become a member of the art faculty, was the spirit behind “Mga Munting Daliri,” which held annual summer art workshops for public school students.
