Art cure lab set up

TO PROTECT and conserve the University’s rich collection of artifacts and artworks, the Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics (CCCPET) and the Museum for Arts and Sciences (Museum) have established a new conservation laboratory at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex (TARC)—a first for any Philippine university, UST officials said.

Artlets dean elected lay Dominican chief

FACULTY of Arts and Letters dean Belen Tangco Ph.D. was recently appointed as the worldwide president of the Dominican Third Order.

“It is an honor for us (Dominican Laity of the Philippines) because she is the first Filipino woman to hold the position,” Fr. Regino Cortes O.P., the spiritual adviser of the Dominican Laity of the Philippines, told the Varsitarian.

The appointment was made when she represented the Asia-Pacific region during a Dominican Family assembly in Paris late April. Tangco was chosen from dozens of Dominican Laity region representatives.

Tourism, HRM form new institute

the University’s Tourism and Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) programs have been separated from the College of Education to form the new UST Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

“(The two programs) are concerned with the business and art of treating guests and the tour and travel profession, while the Education programs focus on teaching,” said Maria Tio Cuison, the director of the new Institute.

Enhanced student participation in community dev’t noted

THE OFFICE for Community and Development (OCD) and the Office for Student Affairs (OSA) expressed satisfaction with the increase in the community development projects effected by UST organizations the past school year.

OCD Director Jose Cruz III said the results were unexpected considering that the OCD and the OSA only conducted a community development forum last year. The forum, “First All Student Leaders’ Community Development Forum,” is a workshop on developmental plans, concerning the integration of outreach projects into the plans of an organization.

UST drafts top PR firm

TO consolidate the Thomasian message in time for the University’s quadricentennial celebration in 2011, the University hired the services of a major public relations firm Public Affairs and Alumni Office (PAAO) Director Cristina Cabral said.

Cabral said EON, the local affiliate of Edelman, the fifth largest global public relations network and the world’s largest independently owned public relations firm, will help the University draft a message that would affirm 400 years of Thomasian core values in time for the celebration.

Exhibit emphasizes UST role in art education

THE UNIVERSITY’S development as a center of art education across the centuries was tackled in the exhibit “From the Church to the Academy”, ran from May 8 to 20 at the UST Museum of Arts and Sciences.

In the exhibit, artworks in the UST collection by Felix Resureccion Hidalgo, Juan Luna, Fabian dela Rosa, Simeon Garcia to Pablo Amorsolo, Fernando Amorsolo, Teodoro Buenaventura, Victorio Edades, Vicente Manansala and Galo Ocampo were exhibited to show the evolution of Filipino artistic style and thematic content.

UST reaches out through music

KRISTIAN Ferrer of the UST Symphony Orchestra played in front of an enthusiastic Batangueño audience—some of them without a clue of what western instruments, like his double bass, sounded like. But after the concert, the loud applause made Kristian reflect upon a different kind of gratification: he had managed to reach out to a broad public with his music.

For the past 18 years, the Conservatory of Music has gone as far north as Ilocos Norte and as far down south as Bukidnon for its unique summer outreach programs.

Debate group wins contest

AFTER a six-year dry spell, the Thomasian Debaters Council (TDC) finally managed to capture a championship title, winning the 1st European Commission–Ombudsman (EC-OMB) National Debate Championship last May 11 at the Ateneo De Manila University.

Former Science dean dies

DESPITE an incurable illness, she remained steadfast in her work until her sickness got the better of her.

Former assistant to the rector for research and development Dr. Gloria Bernas succumbed to a rare disease, amyloidosis, last May 17 at the UST Hospital. She was 64.

Amyloidosis is a term that includes a group of disorders caused by the abnormal accumulation of particular proteins within the tissues of various organs of the body, which then causes the progressive malfunction of the affected organ.

Homecoming nets low alumni turnout

WILL the University’s alumni “come home” for the 2011 celebrations?

Or will they fall short of UST’s expectations, like the grand alumni homecoming last April 29 at the Manila Hotel where only a third of the projected 1,500 attendees attended?

But Public and Alumni Affairs Office (PAAO) director Dr. Cristina Cabral said she was happy with the number of walk-ins and balikbayans who attended for the event.

“We were actually overwhelmed by the turnout of walk-in ticket buyers, and balikbayans who came home for the event,” Cabral said.
