Working scholar admits to theft

A STUDENT assistant (SA) has admitted to stealing the laptop computer of a Faculty of Arts and Letters (Artlets) professor last Aug. 31.

Marty Salumpong (not his real name), a junior from the College of Science, confessed during the investigation of the University Belt Area Police Community Precinct that he took the black Samsonite laptop of Prof. Carlos Manapat, the assistant coordinator for Social Sciences in Artlets. Manapat had left his laptop at the AB Department Chairs’ office at around 7 a.m. on Aug. 30.

Engineering launches new student programs

UST ENGINEERING students held paintbrushes and microphones instead of T-squares and soldering guns when the Engineering Student Council launched its first Alternative Learning School Program (ALSP) last Sept. 11.

The program would provide students lessons on voice, speech, dancing and painting, yoga, judo, and website-making.

“Our program aims to bring out other skills of Engineering students, particularly their aesthetic talents.” Joshua Ireneo, project head of ALSP, said.

Thomasians lead Petron, Metrobank art contests

TWO ALUMNI of the old College of Architecture and Fine Arts won the grand prizes in the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE) National Competition while a Nursing senior and a Graduate School student recieved the grand prizes in two of the three major categories in the sixth ArtPetron National Student Art Competition last Aug. 31.

CFAD awes window company

INTERIOR Design sophomores from the College of Fine Arts and Designs inspired a leading company in window designs to hold a national contest on window fashion after a successful campus-based tilt.

Philippine-based Hunter Douglas, an international company that produces window coverings and architectural products, was impressed by the 12 window entries of Thomasians in a campus contest it sponsored last August.

Former Med Tech head dies

ASSOCIATE Professor Guillermina Aligada, the first department chair of Medical Technology (Med Tech), quietly passed away last Sept. 19 at the UST Hospital. She was 78.

Joselito Aligada, her eldest son, told the Varsitarian that his mother suffered from a heart attack last Sept. 18 and was rushed to the USTH emergency room by her husband, former Civil Law Dean Augusto Aligada Jr., and her fourth son, Mario. She was moved to the Intensive Care Unit the next day but died in the evening.

STEPS blocks more websites

THOMASIANS must now surf outside UST to hook on to their favorite music as YouTube, a free video hosting website, was included in the Santo Tomas E-Service Providers’ (STEPS) list of blocked sites.

YouTube joined 68 other websites that were banned for catering to porn, social network service sites like Friendster and Myspace, and proxy sites that let users surf blocked sites anonymously like Pure Privacy, Proxify, and Public Proxy server.
