Pope Francis beatifies Paul VI

Oct. 19, 2014, 11:45 p.m. - THE POPE who reaffirmed the teachings of the Catholic Church on human life is one step away from sainthood.

Pope Francis on Sunday beatified Pope Paul VI during the closing Mass of the Third Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

The late pontiff’s image was unveiled in front of thousands of pilgrims. The relic of Paul VI brought to Pope Francis was one of the two wool undershirts that the late pontiff wore when a Bolivian painter stabbed him in the chest during his visit to the Philippines in 1970.

Pope elevates Dominican Shrine of Our Lady of Manaoag to ‘minor basilica’

Oct. 14, 2014, 2:09 p.m. - THE  SHRINE of Our Lady of Manaoag, which is under the spiritual leadership of the Filipino Dominicans in the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan, is now a minor basilica.

In a Facebook message posted yesterday, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines President Archbishop Socrates Villegas announced that Pope Francis had granted the title “minor basilica” to the shrine.

“The Archdiocese of Lingayen Dagupan is immensely blessed!” Villegas said on his Facebook page.

Papal visit set on Jan. 15-19, 2015

29 July 2014, 3:21 p.m. - THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas will host its fourth papal visit when Pope Francis goes on a three-day pastoral journey to Manila and Leyte in January 2015.

Details of the 2015 papal visit will be announced in a press conference at the Arzobispado de Manila later this afternoon by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, Pasig Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara who heads the social communication commission of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, and Archbishop Giuseppe Pinto, the papal nuncio.

Pope Francis is expected to meet President Benigno S. Aquino III in Malacañang, and will lead an open-air Mass at the Quirino Grandstand.

Pope appoints Thomasian prelate as Vatican ambassador to UN

03 July 2014, 10:587 p.m. - A THOMASIAN prelate has been named by Pope Francis as the Vatican's representative to the United Nations (UN) in New York.

Archbishop Bernardito Auza, 55, the apostolic nuncio to Haiti, was appointed as permanent observer of the Holy See to the UN last July 1, replacing Indian Archbishop Francis Chulikatt who had been serving since 2010.

Auza’s new job as permanent observer to the UN includes following “attentively and with interest the work of UN Organizations,” according to the official website of the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN.
