Thomasians rally for Students’ Code approval; CSC calls for wider support

Oct. 24, 2014, 9:09 p.m. - MORE than 200 students trooped to the Plaza Mayor Friday afternoon to demand the immediate approval of the Students’ Code, closing the week-long Students’ Rights and Welfare (STRAW) week spearheaded by the Central Student Council (CSC).

Central Board Speaker and Faculty of Civil Law Student Council President Victor Villanueva said college student councils had failed to involve students in the campaign, and should do more to increase awareness and participation.

CSC calls on Thomasians to support passage of Students’ Code

Oct. 21, 2014, 4:45 p.m. - THE CENTRAL Student Council (CSC) today urged Thomasians to participate in the campaign to finally secure approval for the proposed Students’ Code this year, in a forum at the Central Seminary gym.

“Kailangan nating aminin na hindi priority ng [UST] administration ‘yung pagpasa ng Students’ Code sa ngayon, kaya kailangan nilang [maramdaman] na gusto talaga nating maipasa ito ngayong taon,” Central Board Speaker and Civil Law Student Council President Victor Villanueva said during the annual Students’ Rights and Welfare (STRAW) Forum.

More changes to Students’ Code sought

Oct. 16, 2014, 7:38 a.m. - The proposed Students’ Code still needs revisions, UST officials said in a meeting with the Central Student Council (CSC) Wednesday, reducing the code's chances of being implemented this year.

Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Clarita Carillo said the possible room for improvement in the code was “how the ideas of the students can be phrased in the statements that they want to include in the document.”

Student’s Code takes one step closer to passage

AFTER a decade-long delay, the Students’ Code will soon be on the Rector's table.

Outgoing Central Student Council (CSC) President Gab Kintanar said in an interview that the code will be submitted to Rector Fr. Herminio Dagohoy, O.P. after being signed by the CSC Central Board consisting of the CSC president and the local student council presidents, and Prof. Evelyn Songco, assistant to the rector for student affairs. The code is with Songco at present.

When the Rector approves the code, he will then endorse it to the Council of Regents and the Academic Senate, said Artlets student council president Henry Villamiel. If it passes muster, the code will be submitted to the student body for a plebiscite.
