The feast marks the birth of St. Dominic de Guzman in 1170 in Caleruega, Spain.
St. Dominic founded the Order of Preachers, or the Dominican Order, in 1216 to combat heresy and address the spiritual and intellectual needs of the people of the time.
The order, which follows monastic rules of prayer and penance, is credited for its intellectual tradition, producing many theologians and philosophers including St. Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of UST.
Last year, Dominican religious and lay people celebrated the 800th founding anniversary of the order.
