UST parish priest Paul Talavera, O.P. delivers the homily during the Mass for the Solemnity of Christ the King on Nov. 20 at the UST Santisimo Rosario Parish Church.

Advent is a time for repentance as Christians prepare to mark the birth of Christ,  UST parish priest Paul Talavera, O.P. said during the Mass for the Solemnity of Christ the King on Nov. 20 at the UST Santisimo Rosario Parish Church.

In his homily, Talavera said the faithful must commit themselves to repent as another liturgical year is set to begin on the first Sunday of Advent on Nov. 27.

“The advent season is characterized by penance, it is characterized by turning back to the Lord, pagbabalik loob sa Diyos,” Talavera said.

“Aminin mo ang iyong mga kasalanan, baguhin mo ang iyong buhay nang sa ganoon, maging karapat dapat ka rin na makasama ng ating Panginoon,” he added.

Referencing a viral news item about a thief who claimed he stole a cellphone with a clear conscience, the priest said Catholics must avoid justifying sinful acts.

“Minsan talaga napakahirap kung ang definition natin ay masyadong subjective,” he said.

Talavera also emphasized how partaking of the Eucharist was equivalent to saying “Jesus is King of our life” and “Christ is the King of our life.”

The celebration of Christ the King occurs every last Sunday of the Liturgical calendar. In 1925, Pope Pius XI established this feast in response to the rise of atheism and secularism.
