UPDATED Oct. 19, 2014, 1:12 p.m. – WITH no accountancy
graduates this year, the University’s passing rate dropped in the October
licensure examinations for certified public accountants.

UST recorded a 67.53-percent passing rate, or 52 passers out
of 77 examinees. This was lower than last year’s 89.65 percent wherein 329
passed out of 367 examinees.

This year’s batch of Thomasian examinees was composed of
delayed graduates and takers, and repeaters.  The
AMV-College of Accountancy added an additional year in its curriculum this
academic year. Thus, students who were supposed to graduate last May are now on
their fifth year.

Three out of seven first-time takers and 49 out of 70
repeaters passed the exam. There were no Thomasians on the list of top 10
examineess.

The University of the Philippines-Diliman was declared the
top-performing school, after recording a perfect passing rate.

The national passing rate declined to 37.02 percent or 4,123
passers out of 11,137 examinees, compared with last year’s 40.84 percent or
4,246 passers out of 10,396 examinees. R. A. Vergara, Jr.

  1. “This year’s batch of Thomasian examinees was composed of delayed graduates and repeaters.”

Wow Varsi. What a graceful way to say it. I think this is quite an offensive way to describe the Thomasian examinees.

  2. Very inappropriate article to highlight the repeaters and delayed graduates as the cause for the slip. Varsitarian please be considerate and take action. Thanks

  3. newspapers are meant to spread raw information. it is upon the judgment of the person who reads it that will create his/her personal bias. choose words that will not stir people, kapwa nyong thomasasian yan but it seems that you indirectly persecute your own. kung wala din naman kami di din kayo magkakaroon ng ibabalita. if you want a positive output so much then wag ka na kayo magsulat ng balita.

  4. “This year’s batch of Thomasian examinees was composed of delayed graduates and repeaters.”

I find this article foul and unfair to those who took the board exams. You should have just stated that this was due to the change in the college’s curriculum instead of bashing the blame to the ones who took the exam-“delayed graduates and repeaters”.

Thomasian din mga yan. Instead of making it seem like they’re the reason for the drop in the university’s passing rate, why not congratulate and continue to support the rest?

I suggest for the author of the article to post a public apology to the community. I think that was too much.

  5. Why feed us the obvious? No examiners, no board rates. I honestly don’t think it’s worth reporting.

Board takers (especially the people you describe as “repeaters”) don’t need this kind of negativity in their lives. Pointing out that the ones who failed, failed again.

You’re gonna raise the Suicide rates with this dude.

  6. wow! Sounds very discriminatory. Respect pls!

  7. This article is poorly done. Because it singled out our co-thomasians you labeled as REPEATERS and DELAYED students as the sole reason for the slip in the passing rate of UST. Did it ever occur to the writer that there were various factors involved in the most recent CPA licensure exams? If you were NOT even aware then let me enumerate to you:

    1. Change of BOA (Board of Accountancy) Members in 2014. The BOA regulates the licensure exams given to the examinees. Exams are scheduled every May and October. During 2014, the licensure exam that was scheduled on May 2014 was postponed INDEFINITELY because the BOA members were incomplete. The BOA members were only completed in May 2014 and immediately scheduled the exam in July 2014.

    2. Since the BOA is composed now of new members, of course, the exam styles were also new.

    3. In the July 2014 and October 2014 CPA exams, there were subjects that were not previously included in the CPA Exam syllabus like English and grammar though I do not intend to say that AMV students are weak in grammar/english.

    4. Now as I have mentioned, the exam that was scheduled in May was only rescheduled in July and all succeeding CPA licensure exams will be given in the usual dates (that is October and then May). If you can just imagine the pressure of the examinees who were given only 2 months (August and September) to prepare for the board exams.

Now tell me again, Mr. Writer, did you do your homework and researched on your article? Why single out our co-thomasians you branded as REPEATERS and DELAYED students? Were you implying something here? Do you know how to draw the line between honest/responsible reporting versus name-calling? I hope you and Ms. Batchelor read this comment (especially her infamous QUICK-TIP) and then tell me again, did you do proper research for this article?

  8. Well I guess if we’re gonna single out Thomasians with poor performance, we can say that nowadays, writers of The Varsitarian don’t have the know-how regarding responsible journalism. Making editors and the institution who print such articles stand by the position of their reporters.

“We all know that newspaper writers try to write short, meaningful headlines that capture the heart of the story and can still capture a readers attention.

The problem comes when the writer either spends too much time tweaking the headline or simply gets too close to the story to read their shortened headlines with a truly fresh and unbiased perspective. And these final, edited headlines can create some unexpected results.”

And that’s where the professional judgement and responsible journalism kicks in. Stories like these only makes UST, a well-revered Catholic university, look like a high-rating-hungry-institution with no regard for the well being of their students. Where UST-AMV College of Accountancy officials only washes their hands to make their previous high-ratings look like it’s not their fault that it fell short this CPA board examination.

I think being on top got into the heads of some here. Nasaktan ba pride niyo?

Oo nga pala, sa mga iba dito, please stop with the mas mahirap course namin sa course niyo.

  11. It was PRC who said that UST examinees this year was composed of repeaters. sila po ang sisihin natin. let us not attack the writer for doing their job. to report news and serve it the way it is.

Fact is, comparing to last year mas mababa passing rate nyo, nakalagay naman yung rason kung bakit eh.

Sa statement na “This year’s batch of Thomasian examinees was composed of delayed graduates and takers, and repeaters.”

  14. Did you know that The Varsitarian has advisers? Do you think they publish or post an article instantly? Of course it has to got through the advisers first. COMMON SENSE. Stop blaming the writer because if his article is erroneous or offensive in any way then it’s the responsibility of the advisers to filter and advise on how they could improve it.

PARA KAYONG EWAN NA NAGKAKAGULO HANGGANG NGAYON AT SINASABING MEDIOCRE ARTICLE OR IRRESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM ITO. UNANG-UNA SA LAHAT BAGO KAYO MAG-JUDGE, MARUNONG BA KAYONG MAGBASA AT MAGSULAT NG NEWS?

IT IS CLEAR THAT THE ARTICLE IS JUST NEWS. NO MORE, NO LESS. I DON’T SEE WHY PEOPLE ARE OVERREACTING THAT THEY’RE BEING OFFENDED AND THAT THE WRITER MUST APOLOGIZE. ISIPIN NIYO NGA. YUNG MGA NEWS NA OFFENSIVE KAY PRES. AQUINO…EDI SANA UBOS NA ANG MEDIA AND PRESS PEOPLE NGAYON AT PURO PUBLIC APOLOGY ANG LAHAT NG NASA BREAKING NEWS KUNG GANYAN DIN LANG NA LAHAT NA LANG OFFENSIVE SA INYO.

Ang kitid lang ng mga utak. Napaka-OA. Tsss. Isip-isip din pag may time.

    • We know na may advisers. And excuse me. Kaya namin nabasa and mgsulat ng news. Yabang. Damit satsat. Dinamay mo pa si PNoy. Hindi naman yung style of writig yung problem, yung labelling and choice of words. Quick tip: be sensitive enough. Thomasians din yung tinutukoy dito.

  15. “This year’s batch of Thomasian examinees was composed of delayed graduates and takers, and repeaters.”

I do not believe that it’s offensive. Mag-isip tayo, pwede iyon.
