AFTER dropping their first two games, the UST Golden Sox cruised to their second straight win with a 20-4 rout of the Adamson University Soaring Falcons in the UAAP Season 79 baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Sunday.

Noriel Valencia and Jayrome Kimilat delivered four runs apiece for the Golden Sox as the Falcons exhausted all of their pitchers in an attempt to stop UST’s batting clinic.

“Maganda ‘yung pinakita ng team ngayon gawa nang [binasa] talaga namin ang pitching ng Adamson. Mainit din ang batting natin,” UST head coach Jeffrey Santiago said in an interview with the Varsitarian.

With the game already beyond Adamson’s reach, 4-17, the umpires were forced to apply the mercy rule as Valencia, Kimilat and Kirk Daquis scored another three straight conversions in the seventh inning.

Adamson built an early 3-0 lead in the opening inning. But UST retaliated in the following inning with six players reaching home plate and Daquis drilling a homerun in the left field, 7-3.

The Golden Sox pushed their lead to double digits from the third to fifth inning, 14-4, behind seven runs from Valencia, Kimilat, Daquis, Alwen Calbang, Ron Christian Dela Cruz and Elijah Pagkaliwagan.

Should the Golden Sox win the continuation of their game against the University of the Philippines, which was postponed due to time constraints, they will land second in the standings at the end of the first round.

The UST-UP game will resume on Feb. 22, Wednesday, at the same venue.
