Oct. 24 2016, 7:30 p.m. – THE UST Tiger Jins put their chances of winning a gold medal in jeopardy as both the men’s and women’s teams split their matches on the second day of the UAAP Season 79 taekwondo tournament at the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagle gym Monday.

UST made quick work of NU in the men’s division as Juan Miguel Ramos defeated Anjon Ortonio with a 5-0 rout in the fifth game.  The Tiger Jins finished the series with a 5-2 victory.

Ramos continued his impressive showing with a 10-1 win over Mitchell Agapito in the fourth game to keep UST alive, 1-3, but Kyle Uy clinched the series for DLSU, which won 5-2.

In women’s play, the Lady Jins fell short against National University, 3-4, but nipped Ateneo de Manila, 4-3.

Down 2-3 against the Ateneo, the Lady Jins relied on clutch performances by Marjelle Sy and Charm Ragutana, who won the last two matches.

“Number one concern with the players is mindset. Problem with the players, ang mindset nila is grabbing the championship, which shouldn’t happen,” assistant coach Gershon Bautista told the Varsitarian.

The Lady Jins, who hold a 2-2 record, should beat defending champion University of the East and powerhouse De La Salle University to keep their gold medal hopes alive.

The Tiger Jins, with a 3-1 win-loss card, are still in the running for their third consecutive championship. They will face UE and UP in the final day of the tournament tomorrow at the same venue.
