THE UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe clinched the third prize in the folk dance and contemporary dance categories of the annual dance competition Sayaw Pinoy 2018 held at the Luneta Open Air Auditorium, Rizal Park last Oct. 21.

Salinggawi’s contemporary dance titled “Queueing Class” portrayed the everyday struggles of the working class, through brisk movements and modern costumes.

They also performed the folk dance “Jota Moncadeña,” an upbeat Filipino colonial dance from the province of Tarlac that requires dancers to create rhythms with bamboo castanets.

“The results [are] very fulfilling… [but] the values we’ve picked up through the long road [are more important],” said Salinggawi President Ferrena Enriquez.

The competition had four categories: folk, contemporary, ballroom and hip-hop.

Sayaw Pinoy is a national dance competition organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
