PRINTMAKER and advertising arts alumnus Mars Bugaoan opened a solo exhibit of installations and prints titled “Empty Nest” at the Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo last June 13.

Bugaoan’s installation complemented Pinto’s white exhibit space with pieces that were subtle yet full of motion.

“The show is a celebration of form, to encourage the audience to look closely,” Bugaoan said in an interview with the Varsitarian.

The exhibit displayed site-specific installations of vinyl plastic-wrapped branches arranged within the museum’s classic bed frames.

“Nest No. 1-5,” the centerpiece of the exhibit, is a series of installations made of compressed vinyl plastics.

“You celebrate the form as it is, walang ‘pre-judgement’ kung ano lang dapat meaning… Doon ko rin nakikita na mas buhay ‘yong artwork if ‘yung interaction n’ya nagbigay ng experience sa tao at nagkaroon ka ng sarili mong pagkakaintindi sa work,” Bugaoan said.

The printmaker included his only print in the exhibit titled “I Am Still Here,” made on embossed paper and printed with heated plastic.

“I don’t know exactly how to put the concept [behind the exhibit] into words, but it’s like a nest… it’s a home and a place of possibilities,” he said.

Bugaoan graduated cum laude with a degree in advertising arts in 2009. Genielyn Rosario M. Soriano
