FINE ARTS alumnus Wesley Valenzuela featured urban Manila culture in a gallery exhibit which opened Aug. 22.

Valenzuela, in collaboration with fellow artists Wipo and Buboy Cañafranca, made use of imagery from the city in his exhibit titled “Staring into Space.”

The exhibit’s main piece is a 36 x 84-inch acrylic and serigraph on canvas titled “Triptych,” which portrays Valenzuela’s experience of the city.

“It is basically inspired by urban Manila aesthetics and popular culture, as well as its history and how it relates to my own experience,” Valenzuela told the Varsitarian.

The exhibit was organized by Space Encounters, a furniture shop and interior design firm founded in 2009 by Thomasian interior designer Wilmer Lopez.

“[Holding exhibits like this] is a way of supporting Filipino artists and we believe that art is an important element in a space. Mixing interior design and art is a good approach for a gallery,” Lopez told the Varsitarian.

“Staring Into Space” will run until September 18.
