Salvador “Buddy” Ching's solo exhibit "INKwentro" runs until Sept. 16

HISTORY and modern technology combined in Thomasian artist Salvador “Buddy” Ching’s solo exhibit “INKwentro,” which opened on Sept. 9 at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall in Mandaluyong.

Ching, who graduated with a degree in Fine Arts in 1986, depicted the progress of technology throughout Philippine History in his exhibit.

Ching’s main piece “Engkwentro,” a 48 x 69 acrylic and graphite on canvas, portrayed women wearing traditional clothing and men wearing suits while carrying modern gadgets.

Gusto kong ipakita na hindi pa rin namamatay ang ganiyang imahe ng Pilipino…at kung papaano ikokonekta sa panahon noon ang mga nauuso ngayon,” Ching told the Varsitarian.

Ching said “Engkwentro” was inspired by national hero Jose Rizal’s letter to the women of Malolos.

Siguro inspired ako dahil taga Bulacan ako at nag-start ito noong nabasa ko iyong Women of Malolos, iyong mga kababaihan na ipinaglaban ‘yung karapatan ng mga babae para makapag-aral,” he said.

Other artworks displayed included “Maria,” a 12×19 acrylic and graphite on canvas showcasing shades of red, and “Supot (Paper Bag 2019 Series),” a 11×6 acrylic, pastel, charcoal and graphite on paper depicting a woman wearing traditional Filipino dress and a gas mask.

“INKwentro” will run until Sept. 16. J.V.V.Yap
