FORMER Varsitarian chief photographer Basilio Sepe bagged 2nd place in the Top news, Singles category of the 5th Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest on Sept. 10 in Moscow, Russia.

His winning entry, “Baywatch,” shows a group of Filipinos watching the tides as they stand on a pile of trash during the onslaught of Typhoon Karding in August 2018.

“The photo shows the power of emotion and, at the same time, the Filipino spirit in the midst of trials, disasters, in the midst of everything wrong and sad,” Sepe told the Varsitarian.

Sepe was the lone Filipino winner among some 6,000 participants in the event.

“It’s a really good feeling and a proud moment to be a photojournalist. I felt proud, not just for my work, but also because I represented my country, carrying with me my Thomasian and Varsitarian blood,” Sepe said.

The winning photos are on display at the State Historical Museum in Moscow, Russia until Sept. 29.
