BOOKS promoting inclusivity and representation among children, with illustrations by Thomasians, were among the 20 titles released in physical and audio drama versions by Room to Read, a global nonprofit focused on children’s literacy.
“Ang Nanay Kong Drayber,” “Kaya ni Mina,” “Sakto Lang,” “Paalam, Puti,” “Sali Ako!” and “Sayaw ni Dayaw” were illustrated by Thomasian artists Pepot Atienza, Cy Vendivil, Domz Agsaway, Jomike Tejido, Iori Espiritu and Harry Monzon, respectively.
The books tackle gender roles and sensitivity, bullying, people with disabilities and celebration of Filipino culture.
“Ang Nanay Kong Drayber” deals with gender stereotypes and the importance of inclusivity in communities.
“Kaya ni Mina” is about a blind girl who does household chores and takes care of her younger sister.
“It is a simple story that shows blindness does not impede a child’s capacity to be independent,” Vendivil told the Varsitarian.
“Sakto Lang” teaches the importance of making wise financial decisions.
“Paalam, Puti” is about dealing with the loss of a childhood pet.
“Sali Ako!” is about how two animals, Itim and Puti, become friends with others after being shunned for being “different.”
“Sayaw ni Dayaw,” written by Cheeno Marlo Sayuno, is about a young girl who finds out for herself what Filipino folk dance fits best her unique way of dancing.
“This book reminds us that each of us has our own unique build, that some of our weaknesses may turn out to actually be strengths, and that there is space for everyone,” Monzon, the book’s illustrator, told the Varsitarian.
He said “Sayaw ni Dayaw,” along with the other titles, highlights how “different children have different struggles and needs,” and how self-reflection could become a source of solace.
Alfredo Santos, Room to Read’s Southeast Asia book publishing program manager, said the books could help children understand difficult situations in school, friends and even within the family.
“Ito ang unang hakbang na magkaroon ng diwa ng inklusyon sa mga bata,” he said.
The 20 books were Room to Read’s first Filipino releases, in partnership with Philippine publishers Adarna House, Anvil Publishing, Lampara Books and OMF-Hiyas Publishing.
Copies of the books were donated to schools in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
