COLLEGE of Nursing Dean Glenda Vargas topped the performance evaluation survey of deans conducted by the UST Faculty Union (USTFU) among faculty members last semester.

The results, released last Dec. 7 during the general assembly at the Medicine Auditorium, showed Vargas with a 3.59 average weighted mean. The highest rating is four, while the lowest is one.

The deans were rated based on their leadership and management style, work attitude, job knowledge, quality and quantity of work, effectiveness and interpersonal skills.

According to the analysis of the results, the rating of Vargas means she is highly effective.

Sixteen deans from the University’s colleges, faculties, and institutes were evaluated. Atty. Augusto Aligada, Jr., Dr. Rolando Lopez, and Dr. Lilian Sison of the Faculty of Civil Law, the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, and Graduate School, respectively, were the only deans not evaluated.

Dr. Raul Sunico of the Conservatory of Music ranked second with 3.43 while Dr. Fortunato Sevilla of the College of Music was third with 3.34. Former College of Architecture Dean Augusto Concio ranked last with a 1.81 average weighted mean.

USTFU executive director Rene Luis Tadle said the evaluators regarded interpersonal skills and experience as the most important qualities of a dean.

Based on the results, USTFU suggested that the University should hold development seminars on interpersonal relations for the deans. It also said a faculty consultation should be held prior to the appointment of deans in order to have better choices. J. R. T. Cabangcalan
