NEXT TIME there’s a storm, suspending classes in flood-prone UST is just one text away.
UST has tied up with Globe Telecom to provide exclusive subscriber identity module (SIM) cards to students and employees, allowing them to get up-to-date University announcements.
Office of Planning and Quality Management head Fr. Arthur Dingel, O.P. said 50,000 Globe SIM cards would be distributed to the Thomasian community.
“It would be very handy during the rainy season when the students will just receive a text message from the Secretary General about the suspension of classes in times of heavy flooding,” he said.
Under the contract, Globe will give UST a total of 480,000 free text messages every month to be able to send official notices and announcements.
A “hack-proof” messaging system will be installed at either the Office of the Rector or the Office of the Secretary General to ensure the credibility of information sent to SIM card holders, Dingel said.
At least 3,000 people were trapped inside the campus last September 26 when the announcement of suspension of classes came in late at 10 a.m., despite the Rector’s decision to let students go home at 9 a.m.
Dingel clarified that the UST-Globe SIM card is not compulsory. In October 13, he issued a memorandum to all deans, principals, and department heads asking how many would avail themselves of the new SIM card.
About 5,000 alumni will also be given SIM cards.
“This would be a great help for us to reach our alumni during the quadricentennial celebration,” Dingel said.
There is no definite timeframe yet for the release of the Globe SIM cards, but producing them usually take three months, he said. Darenn G. Rodriguez

Sana i-upgrade na lang yoong SIM card namin so we won’t change mobile numbers kung may ganoon man.
Sana nga puwede na lang mag-upgrade, hirap na kasi magpalit ng number.
Sana po puwede rin yoong pa-uprade na lang yoong SIM. Baka po kasi yoong iba magkaroon ng conflict kasi hindi puwede magpalit ng no. Pero globe pa rin naman ang network namin. Thanks!

Would the rates exclusive for the UST SIM be for good?
Because some of us rather worry regarding the possibility of this being just another limited “promo” of Globe. Just as what was then the “for good” unlimited text rate.
Will the rates of the UST SIM still apply AFTER the year 2011? Or will the rates be just for the celebration of our quadricentennial year? :3
It’s a Globe sim. As long as your using it, it’ll work. There’s no sim that will expire in a year if you’re maintaing it in good shape, even if it’s limited edition or special sims. It’s just used for students, in UST, for the reason that there’s always suspensions of classes. And see, the text rate’s only .5cents and the calls are P3/min. Isn’t that great?

Enrollment sa College of Science and Faculty of Pharmacy kanina. Pagpasok sa enrollment area meron nang Globe stand dun. Pero di ko pinansin. Kala ko raket lan ng Globe. Pumasok muna ako sa Gym. Sabi nila sa dulong-dulo daw punta ko. Tapos nun lumabas na ko ng Gym. Kaya lang parang feeling kong maki-usisa sa Globe stand na nasa entrance. Ayun. Ang galing nga eh! Magloload ka lang ng 30 o 40. Pag 40 me promo pa! Palabunutan at free icecream cone! Pinapili nila ako ng number … Mga naka-enroll lang pde kumuha. Kailangan mo pang pumirma at ilagay ung student no mo. At isa lan pde.
