14 September 2013, 9:00 p.m. – THE 9th Varsitarian Creative Writing Workshop wrapped up Sunday afternoon with renowned Filipino writers in English sharing the essentials of the craft with 12 fellows.

Poet D.M. Reyes, writer Shirley Lua, and fictionist Joel Pablo Salud sat on the panel in the last day of the two-day workshop.

Salud discussed fiction writing and encouraged fellows to critique their own works. He emphasized the need to make the element of conflict effective in the plot and the importance of “letting the story tell itself.”

Lua and Reyes talked about form and consistency during the poetry session. Salud emphasized that the use of imagery in poetry is not for illustration purposes. “Poetry is not an illustrative genre,” Reyes said.

Yesterday, Palanca awardee Eros Atalia, fictionist Beverly Siy, and poet Rebecca Añonuevo graced the workshop’s opening.

This year’s 12 fellows were Rommel Roxas, Hans Malgapu, Reinalyn Domasig, Patricia Villaraza, Ephraim Bie, Micah Carando, Iza Gonzalez, Alpine Moldez, Katherine Cordero, Glenn Pernes, Irish Foja, and Rijel Reyes. Marie Danielle L. Macalino
