October 11, 2015, 9:19p.m. – CATHOLIC faithful should use the social media as a means to spread the good news.

This was the message of Sean-Patrick Lovett, director of the Vatican Radio English Language Section, during the first day of the fourth annual Catholic Social Media Summit at Sta. Rosa City Hall in Laguna on Oct. 10.

Lovett said netizens should take the common good into consideration when they use social media. He said: “Is what I’m doing good? Is what I’m doing bringing people closer to God? Does it bring people closer together?”

Thomasian lawyer Rodel Taton discussed cyberethics and cyberlaw. “Cyberethics originates in our freedom to act.  This is the essence of cyberethics – to act responsibly,” Taton said.

Msgr. Pedro Quitorio, director of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Media Office, led the opening Mass, where he said the formation of an “online faith society” was important for digital Church media.

“I have been in social media for quite a time, I think this is our responsibility. Let our postings flow from this, so that whatever we post may flow from the gospel of Christ,” Quitorio said.

On Oct. 11, the summit will hold the Catholic Social Media Awards (CSMA), the first Church-based awards for social media content, with Maine Mendoza and Wally Bayola of Eat Bulaga’s “Kalyeserye” segment getting citations for promoting values. Lea Mat P. Vicencio
