December 11, 2015, 9:00p.m. – THE DEAN of the Faculty of Civil Law was elected chairman of the board of trustees of the Philippine Association of Law Schools (PALS) for the years 2015 to 2017 during the group’s annual meeting in Guam.
Nilo Divina, the youngest Civil Law dean in UST history who was reelected PALS president last year, is joined by the following law deans in the new roster of PALS officers:
- Sol Deriquito-Mawis of Lyceum University of the Philippines, president;
- Danilo Concepcion of the University of the Philippines, executive vice president;
- Sedfrey Candelaria of Ateneo de Manila, secretary general;
- Joan Largo of University of San Carlos, deputy secretary general;
- Jose Manual Diokno of De La Salle University, vice president for the Greater Manila Area;
- Ralph Sarmiento of La Salle Bacolod, vice president for the Visayas; and
- Irsaelito Torreon of Cor Jesu College, vice president for Mindanao.
The newly elected trustees for Luzon are deans Jason Barlis of Saint Louis University and Peachy Moraleda of University of Northeastern Philippines. Deans Al Deslate of La Purisima Concepcion and Macacuna Moslem of Mindanao State University are the new trustees for the Visayas and Mindanao, respectively.
Dean Josefe Ty of Fr. Saturnino Urios University of Butuan is trustee at large while Ernest Maceda is adviser to the Council of Elders.
PALS is a non-stock corporation that seeks to improve legal education to meet global standards, unite law schools, and promote legal aid to the poor and the marginalized. It is composed of 112 members, all deans from different law schools in the country.
The Senate and House of Representatives regularly consult PALS on legal and constitutional concerns. The group is also a source of advice and assistance for lawyer-members of the Cabinet on matters of governance. Roy Abrahmn D.R. Narra
