23 April 2016, 12:00 am – WITH LESS than a month before the May 9 elections, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte stands side-by-side with Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago as the top presidential bets of UST students.

Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Camarines Sur Rep. Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo were tied for vice president in a survey of Thomasians conducted by the Varsitarian.

The survey, conducted from February to April, had 1,356 respondents randomly selected through stratified clusters.

Santiago, of the People’s Reform Party, was the choice of 38.42 percent of respondents. PDP-Laban candidate Duterte got 37.75 percent. Duterte was not included in the first Varsitarian survey conducted late last year because the questionnaires were prepared before he announced his candidacy.

Independent candidate Sen. Grace Poe got 8 percent while Liberal Party standard-bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas II got 6 percent. Other candidates – Vice President Jejomar Binay of the opposition United Nationalist Alliance, Mel Mendoza of Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino, independent candidate Dante Valencia, and the late OFW Family party-list representative Roy Señeres obtained less than 1% combined.

A significant proportion, 9 percent, chose to abstain.

Senator Marcos, son and namesake of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos who was ousted by the 1986 People Power Revolution, was the choice of 28.2 percent of Thomasian respondents for the vice presidency.

Given a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, he is in a statistical tie with Robredo, Roxas’ vice president, who got 24.9 percent.

Duterte’s running mate, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, followed with 17.6 percent.

Sen. Francis Escudero got 9.2 percent, Sen. Gregorio Honasan II, 3.6 percent, and Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, 3.2 percent.

More than 13 percent had no choice for vice president. Paul Xavier Jaehwa C. Bernardo and Monica M. Hernandez
