Ex-Graduate School dean passes away at 93

Rev. Fr. Paul Zwaenepoel, CICM, former dean of the UST Graduate School, died last March 22 at the age of 93.

Fr. Zwaenepoel was dean of the Graduate School from 1983 to 1987. Before that, he served as assistant to the rector for external development. He was a faculty member from 1977 to 1987.

The Belgian educator came to the Philippines in 1950 and taught at Saint Louis University in Baguio City, where he was president from 1964 to 1976.

On April 7, 1975, Fr. Zwaenepoel was granted Filipino citizenship through Presidential Decree No. 682 issued by President Ferdinand Marcos, for his contributions to Philippine education.

In 2000, he was given the Presidential Award for Filipinos and Organizations Overseas.

He received various honorary degrees, including doctor of laws from Kyung Hee University of South Korea in 1973 and doctor of arts in pedagogy from Great China Arts College World University of Hong Kong in 1972.

The wake was held at Aloysius Gonzaga Church of Saint Louis University in Baguio City.
