12 of the top 20 Thomasian scientists based on the 2024 AD Scientific Index

Editor’s note: The Varsitarian assembled the list of the top 20 Thomasian scientists using data from the 2024 Alper-Doger (AD) Scientific Index as of Oct. 2, 2023. It’s possible that the index ranking may have been influenced by inaccuracies in the crediting of research authorship. The Varsitarian has contacted the AD Scientific Index for clarification.

A TOTAL of 160 Thomasian scientists played a role in securing UST’s sixth-place position among Philippine universities in the 2024 Alper-Doger (AD) Scientific Index.

The index ranks institutions based on the performance and productivity of their scientists using citation scores and values of the author impact index from Google Scholar.

It uses the total and last six years’ values of the author impact index and citation scores from Google Scholar to rank scientists by subject, institution, country, region, and the world.

Here are the top 20 scientists of the University ranked in the AD Scientific Index:

#1 – Prof. Raymond Rosales


Prof. Raymond Rosales of the UST Research Center for Health Sciences (RCHS) led the crop of Thomasian scientists in the latest AD Scientific Index with 4,433 citations across 78 publications. Subjects of his works include movement disorders, Parkinson’s disease and electrodiagnosis. Rosales ranked 49th in the Philippines in terms of total citations.

#2 – Prof. Allan de Guzman


Prof. Allan de Guzman ranked second among Thomasian scientists in the 2024 index, with 2,534 citations across 75 publications. De Guzman, who is also a researcher at the UST Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSE), was the top scientist in the Philippines in the field of Geriatrics, according to the AD Scientific Index. He was the top Thomasian scientist last year.

#3 – Prof. Allan Macabeo


Prof. Allan Macabeo of the Department of Chemistry ranked third in UST with 1,988 citations across 45 publications. With his works focusing on medicinal chemistry, natural products chemistry, and chemical biology, Macabeo ranked third in the Philippines in the field of chemical sciences. Macabeo is also a researcher at the UST Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences (RCNAS).

#4 – Prof. Thomas de la Cruz


Prof. Thomas de la Cruz of the Department of Biological Sciences was the fourth-best Thomasian scientist, with 1,466 citations across 50 publications. Dela Cruz, a researcher at the UST-RCNAS, was the No. 2 scientist in microbiology in the country.

#5 – Prof. Grecebio Alejandro


Prof. Grecebio Alejandro of the Department of Biological Sciences amassed 1,413 citations from his 44 publications, which had a primary emphasis on natural sciences and biological sciences. He is also a researcher at the UST-RCNAS.

#6 – Dr. Alberto Molano


Dr. Alberto Molano is the chairman of sports medicine at the UST Hospital. He has 1,861 citations across 18 publications, most of which are in orthopedics and sports medicine.

#7 – Dr. Catherine Teh


Dr. Catherine Teh is a graduate of the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery who is now head of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Section at the Makati Medical Center. She has accumulated 3,791 citations from her 21 publications, primarily centered on subjects within the fields of medical and health sciences, as well as general surgery.

#8 – Prof. John Ramos


Prof. John Ramos of the Department of Biological Sciences has accumulated 821 citations from his 27 publications, securing the eighth position among Thomasian scientists. He is also a researcher at the UST-RCNAS.

#9 – Prof. Rey Donne Papa


Prof. Rey Donne Papa, the dean of the College of Science, is the No. 9 most-cited Thomasian researcher according to the 2024 AD Scientific Index. Papa, who is also a researcher at the UST-RCNAS, tallied 769 citations across 28 publications.

#10 – Fr. Nicanor Austriaco, O.P.


Fr. Nicanor Austriaco, O.P. of the Department of Biological Sciences ranked 10th among 160 Thomasian scientists in the latest global scientific index with 1,949 total citations across 28 publications. He is most known for his research on yeast.

#11 – Dr. Stephen Wong


Dr. Stephen Wong of the UST-RCHS has been cited 1,437 times for 17 publications, mainly focusing on hepatology, to place 11th among Thomasian scientists.

#12 – Prof. Librado Santiago


Prof. Librado Santiago of the Department of Biochemistry tallied 936 citations across 21 publications, to rank 12th among Thomasian scientists. He is also a researcher at the UST-RCNAS.

#13 – Prof. Maribel Nonato


Prof. Maribel Nonato of the Department of Chemistry, who is the assistant to the Rector for UST General Santos City, placed 13th among UST scientists with 788 citations across 21 publications. Her research subjects focused on natural and chemical sciences.

#14 – Assoc. Prof. Oliver Villaflores


Assoc. Prof. Oliver Villaflores of the Department of Biochemistry was the 14th-best Thomasian scientist with 944 citations across 23 publications. Villaflores’s studies focused on medical and health sciences and biochemistry. He is also a researcher at the UST-RCNAS.

#15 Asst. Prof. Mae Diesmos


Asst. Prof. Mae Diesmos of the Department of Biological Sciences was cited 818 times across her 19 publications, mostly on the subject of herpetology. She is also a researcher at UST-RCNAS.

# 16 – Asst. Prof. Frederick Masangkay


Asst. Prof. Frederick Masangkay of the Department of Medical Technology published 30 research articles, most of which were in medical and health sciences and microbiology, and were cited 737 times.

#17 – Asst. Prof. Giovanni Milanez


Asst. Prof. Giovanni Milanez of the Department of Medical Technology ranked 17th among Thomasian scientists with 664 citations across 28 publications. His research focus includes protozoology.

#18 – Prof. Mario Tan


Prof. Mario Tan of the Department of Chemistry was cited 504 times across 14 publications, to rank 18th among Thomasian scientists. His research focus includes natural products, total synthesis, and Alzheimer’s disease.

#19 – Asst. Prof. Leonid Zamora


Asst. Prof. Leonid Zamora of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery was cited 498 times across 14 publications, which were mainly on medical and health sciences and immunology.

#20 – Prof. Mary Maningas


Prof. Mary Maningas of the Department of Biological Sciences ranked 20th among Thomasian scientists, with 645 citations across 16 publications. She is also a researcher at the UST-RCNAS.
