UST alumnus EJ Obiena pulled off a record-setting performance to clinch the gold in the pole vault event of the Internationales Stadionfest Indoor athletics meet in Berlin, Germany last Feb. 6 (PH time).
Obiena registered 5.80 meters in one attempt, breaking the 5.62-meter record he set last Jan. 30, 2021.
Torben Blech of Germany also cleared 5.80 meters but did so in two attempts. Oleg Zernikel, another German, placed third with a 5.72-meter jump.
Obiena, a former UST trackster, is among four Filipino athletes who have qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, which has yet to be scheduled. M.E.V. Villeza
