Thomasian pole vaulter EJ Obiena took home gold in the 26th Internationales Stabhochsprung-Meeting in Jockgrim, Germany on Wednesday (Philippine time).

Obiena cleared 5.81 meters in one attempt while Christopher Nilsen, who ranks second worldwide in pole vault, settled for silver in the competition after he cleared 5.71 meters.

Australia’s Kurtis Marschall also cleared 5.71 meters to take home the bronze medal.

Obiena was given a chance to reset the Asian Record but failed in all three attempts.

A gold medal for Obiena also qualified him for the World Championships in Hungary next year after clearing the 5.81-meter standard.

Obiena will next compete in the Athletissima on Thursday (Friday Philippine time) in Lausanne, Switzerland.
