Obiena snags bronze in Swiss tilt

Thomasian pole vaulter EJ Obiena took home the bronze medal during the Athletissima athletics meet in Lausanne, Switzerland on Friday (Philippine time).

Obiena secured the third spot after clearing 5.80 meters in two attempts. He skipped the 5.40 and 5.70-meter bar but cleared 5.60 meters. 

Obiena also failed to clear 5.90 meters in three attempts.

Christopher Nilsen of USA finished second after clearing 5.80 meters in one go while world record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden set a new tournament record of 6.10 meters for the gold medal.

The 26-year-old pole vaulter is currently tied with French pole vaulter Thibaut Collet with 9 points to qualify for the Weltklasse athletics meet in Zürich, Switzerland 

The tournament will serve as the finals of the Wanda Diamond League. 

This is the second tournament for Obiena as part of his 7-leg tournament and will next compete in the True Athletics Classics in Leverkusen, Germany on August 28.
