Back home in the Philippines after a remarkable outdoor season in Europe, World No. 3 pole vaulter EJ Obiena, a Thomasian, will return to UST for a homecoming celebration on Sept. 29.

Obiena, holder of the Asian pole vault record of 5.94 meters and the first Filipino to secure a podium finish in the World Athletics Championships, is currently on leave from his electronics engineering studies at the Faculty of Engineering.

Obiena will be welcomed at the Arch of the Centuries by UST Secretary General Fr. Louie Coronel, O.P. at 10 a.m. on Sept. 29 to start the homecoming event.

A testimonial program and lunch will follow before the University will hold a press conference with Obiena at the Dr. Robert C. Sy Grand Ballroom of the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building.

Obiena recently completed his eight-leg outdoor season with six gold-medal finishes, one of which came from a win against world No. 1 Armand Duplantis of Sweden, one silver medal, and one bronze medal.

A former UST trackster, Obiena holds the UAAP records in pole vault and 110-meter hurdles. Bjorn Del B. Deade
