THE UST Golden Sox demolished the National University Bulldogs, 16-2, in the UAAP Season 81 baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Sunday.

The Golden Sox put the game out of reach in the eighth inning after punching in seven runs courtesy of Ivan Llave, Jayvee Selda, Mark Beronilla, Jan Santiago, Adrian Aguilar, Gio Martinez and Benedict Pedracio.

“Nag-deliver ang palo namin, nakakakonekta kaya nakapasok agad ng siyam at ang importante ay na-hold ng rookie pitcher namin na si Vince Mangapis ang NU for six innings,” UST head coach Jeffrey Santiago told the Varsitarian.

The Golden Sox started the first four innings blazing, converting nine runs courtesy of Mangapis, Alwen Calbang, Selda, Beronilla, Llave, Martinez and Pedracio, 9-0.

NU broke UST’s defense in the fifth inning after Clairon Santos scored via a fielding error, 1-9.

Bulldog Azriel Villalobos followed with a left-field-grounder run-batted-in double that sent Leo Arago back home, 2-9.

The Golden Sox tallied 16 hits in 35 at-bats, while the Bulldogs only had seven hits in 30 at-bats.

The UST duo of Mangapis and Ron Christian de la Cruz fanned 10 sluggers, while NU’s quintet of pitchers only managed to strikeout four batters.

The Golden Sox improved to a 2-1 win-loss card, while the Bulldogs remained winless in three games.

UST will next face the De La Salle University Green Batters on Feb. 27, Wednesday, at the same venue.
