THE UNIVERSITY of the Philippines Fighting Maroons upset the UST Golden Sox, 7-1, in the UAAP Season 81 baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Sunday.

UST fell to a 3-2 win-loss record while UP got its first win in five games.

With already two outs in the third inning, the Fighting Maroons converted four runs, courtesy of Karl Liwanagan, Alphonso Balagtas, JC Yang and Mark Tuballas, 4-0.

“Walang palo, na-dominate kami ng pitcher ng UP. Next round, hindi na muna kami magpapahinga, kailangan namin mag-practice lagi kasi tulog pa ang katawan ng mga bata,” Golden Sox head coach Jeffrey Santiago told the Varsitarian.

The Fighting Maroons scored three more insurance conversions in the sixth inning.

UST’s lone run came in the fifth inning after Israel Antonio’s sacrifice fly that sent Vince Mangapis to home plate, 1-4.

Gino Yang pitched the whole game for UP, allowing only three hits in 28 at-bats. He also fanned eight UST sluggers.

Golden Sox pitchers Mark Beronilla, Arson Lipalam, Ian Llave and Mangapis combined for six strikeouts.
