THE UNIVERSITY of the Philippines Fighting Maroons trumped the UST Golden Sox, 7-3, in the UAAP Season 81 baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Sunday.

The Golden Sox dropped to a 4-3 win-loss record while the Fighting Maroons absorbed their second win in seven games, both against UST.

“Kinulang kami sa hustle at communication sa laro kaya naka-score ang UP sa errors namin. Next three games kailangan pa tibayan ‘yong palo at depensa para ma-sweep,” UST team captain Alwen Calbang told the Varsitarian.

Trailing 0-1 in the third inning, UP converted four runs courtesy of Hanson Landicho, Alphonso Balagtas, Karl Liwanagan and Gabby Yang, 4-1.

UST trimmed its deficit in the fifth inning after Calbang’s two runs-batted-in (RBI) double that sent Ivan Llave and Ron Christian de la Cruz to home plate, 3-4.

But the Maroons answered with three conversions in the seventh inning, courtesy of Landicho, Liwanagan and Balagtas to put the game away.

The Golden Sox failed to capitalize on their base runners with nine left on base.

Gabby Yang registered four RBIs in two hits for UP.

UST will try to get back in the winning column against the De La Salle University Green Batters on March 13, Wednesday, at the same venue.
