THE UST Woodpushers outsmarted the Ateneo de Manila University and National University in the UAAP Season 80 chess tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion Saturday.

UST’s Peter Ablid trounced Ateneo’s Jose Lat as the Male Woodpushers capped off a perfect day for the first time this season.

Male Woodpusher Christian Flores secured the victory in Board 3 after nipping Lorenzo Marquez.

“Nag snowball na, kasi sa board one, panalo kaagad, tapos ‘yung sa (board three) nag-winning din kaagad,” Male Woodpushers team captain Christian Flores said.

In women’s play, the Female Woodpushers defeated NU, 3-1.

With the series tied at 0.5-all, UST’s Cyamir Villanueva and May Ann Alcantara earned back-to-back wins to put the game away for good, 2.5-0.5.

The Male Woodpushers are on a three-way tie with Adamson and FEU at third place with six points, while their female counterparts rose to fourth seed with 7.5 points.

The men’s and women’s team will face NU and Far Eastern University, respectively, tomorrow, 1 p.m., at the same venue.
