THE UST Female Woodpushers forced a 2-2 draw against the University of the East while their male counterparts yielded to Adamson University in the UAAP Season 81 chess tournament opener at Quadricentennial Pavilion Wednesday.

Team captain Highzzy Manaloto was the lone bright spot for the Female Woodpushers after outsmarting UE’s Monaliza Geronimo.

UST’s Glenderlyn Añana and Cyamir Villanueva settled for draw against their respective opponents while May Ann Alcantara yielded to UE’s Nicole Chu.

In men’s play, the Male Woodpushers dropped a 1-3 verdict against Adamson.

“‘Yong Board 2 natin lamang ng dalawang pawn, winning na tapos bigla pang itinabla nang wala man lang abiso sa akin,” UST head coach Ronald Dableo told the Varsitarian.

Male Woodpushers Antonio Almodal and Venz Kwan forced a draw against their respective opponents while Jeffu Dorog and Brylle Vinluan suffered defeats against Adamson’s Godfrey Villamor and Jayson Tapia, respectively.

The Female Woodpushers are tied with UE for fourth place with 2 points while their male counterparts are at seventh place with a point.

The men’s and women’s team will next face UE and Ateneo de Manila University, respectively, on Sept. 22, Saturday, 1 p. m., at the same venue.
