THE UST Woodpushers outsmarted the Adamson University Falcons in the UAAP Season 82 chess tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion Saturday.

The Male Woodpushers outlasted the Falcons, 3-1, while the Female Woodpushers dominated the Lady Falcons, 3.5-0.5.

Male Woodpushers Julius Gonzales, Melito Oscan Jr. and Antonio Almodal III outwitted Adamson’s Remark Bartolome, Khirstian Arellano and Christian Huavas, respectively.

UST’s Samson Lim bowed to Godfrey Villamor of Adamson.

“Ang expectation ko sa men’s, kaya nating mag-champion. Ang worry ko lang ay ‘yong exam week kasi matitigil ang training [at] stop preparation muna,” UST head coach Ronald Dableo told the Varsitarian.

In women’s play, Female Woodpushers Maycydel Fajardo, May Ann Alcantara and Vaneza Villamil pulled off wins over Adamson’s Jashua Patria, Abigail Tamundong and Bonalyn Ornido.

UST’s Jamaica Lagrio settled for a draw with Jellie Ann Magro of Adamson.

“Hindi naman gano’n kadali ipanalo ‘yong position niya (Lagrio) doon sa crucial moment. Ang [t]initignan ko na lang doon, panalo lahat ‘yong team tapos hindi siya natalo,” Dableo said.

The Female Woodpushers now share the second spot with De La Salle University with 17.5 points, while the Male Woodpushers remain solo second in the standings with 17 points.

The Male Woodpushers will next face the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons while the Female Woodpushers face the Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles on Oct. 6, Sunday, 1 p.m. at the same venue. Malic Cotongan
