THE UST Lady Woodpushers sank to the bottom of the standings after faltering against the Adamson Lady Falcons, 3-1, in the UAAP season 86 women’s chess tournament at the FEU Tech Gym on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

Patricia Bernardo utilized the Indian Defense to open the day for UST with a 38-move thrashing of Adamson’s Patria Jashua.

However, UST co-captains Josemier Panol and Rohanisah Buto bowed to Robelle De Jesus and Queenie Samarita in 55 and 48 moves, respectively.

“Nagkulang talaga kami sa performances namin kasi naging maayos naman mga positions namin noong una, pero at the end, parang bumigay na kami,” Panol told the Varsitarian.

UST’s Princes Oncita, with her Sicilian Defense, had the chance to force an overall tie but blundered her bishop advantage against Phoebe Arellano after 74 moves.

“[Sana] mas mai-improve pa ‘yung mga ways on how to improve our positions kasi may mga times na kahit kaunting pagkakamali lang ng isang piyesa, puwede na mag collapse ‘yung buong team,” Panol added.

The Lady Woodpushers dropped to the last place with only two match points, while the Adamson Lady Falcons rose to sixth place with three match points alongside Ateneo and DLSU.

Meanwhile, the UST Male Woodpushers remained atop the standings with a league-best eight match points in the men’s division.

The UST Lady Woodpushers will next face the DLSU Lady Woodpushers at the same venue on Saturday, October 28, at 1 p.m.
