THE UST Lady Woodpushers settled for a 2-2 draw with the winless DLSU Lady Woodpushers in the UAAP women’s chess tournament at the FEU Tech Gym on Saturday, October 28.

Joannah Olay succumbed to DLSU’s Checy Telesforo and her Sicilian Invitation variation of the Rèti Opening in 32 moves.

UST team captain Josemier Panol bounced back after her defeat in the previous match with a 47-move trouncing of Francois Magpily’s Modern Defense.

Patricia Bernardo then gave UST a 2-1 advantage after unlocking Rinoa Sadey’s Scandinavian Defense in 40 moves.

After the game, UST head coach Ronald Dableo praised Bernardo’s swift adjustment to the seniors level.

“Bago [siya] pero ang bilis mag-adjust, siguro dahil exposed sa tournaments bago pumasok sa atin,” he told the Varsitarian.

Rohanisah Buto had a chance to get UST back to its winning ways but failed after faltering in 102 moves in what became the day’s longest match against Sara Olendo.

UST remained in last place with three match points alongside Ateneo and Adamson, while La Salle placed third in the standings alongside UP with four match points built on four draws.

The UST Lady Woodpushers will conclude Stage 1 against the NU Lady Bulldogs at the same venue on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
