THE UST Lady Woodpushers outplayed the Adamson Lady Falcons, 2.5-1.5, to end their four-game losing streak in the UAAP women’s chess tournament at the FEU Tech Gym on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

Princes Oncita delivered UST’s first win of the day after utilizing the King’s Variation of the English Opening to defeat Adamson’s Phoebie Arellano in 44 moves.

Patricia Bernardo only needed 19 moves using the Scotch Gambit to oust Christine Hernandez in Board 4.

Ngayon, sa totoo lang, hindi maganda ‘yung standings namin. Pero, willing kami mag-improve pa as a team. Handa ‘rin ako mag-improve,” Bernardo, one of the bright spots for the team this season with three wins, told the Varsitarian.

Lady Woodpusher Rohanisah Buto forced a draw against Jashua Patria in 52 moves to secure the win for UST.

In Board 1, UST team captain Josemier Panol blundered her winning board using the Sicilian Defense to succumb to Robelle de Jesus in 52 moves.

“Maganda ‘yung panalo nila ngayon kasi nag-sixth place kami dahil sa panalo. At least kahit papano, parang konsuwelo na din,” UST head coach Ronald Dableo said.

“Ang hope namin is to end the season strong pero may two games pa kasi kaya hindi ko pa masabi eh. Mabibigat pa din kalaban.”

The UST Lady Woodpushers rose to sixth place with five match points ahead of the Adamson Lady Falcons who have four match points.

They will next face the DLSU Lady Woodpushers at the same venue on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m.
