UST Junior Fencers shine in UAAP opener

UST’S HIGH school fencers collected four medals but the collegiate squads went home empty-handed in Day 1 of the UAAP Season 81 fencing tournament at the Victoria Sports Complex in Quezon City Thursday.

The Junior Tiger Fencers notched one gold and one silver medal while the Junior Lady Fencers bagged two bronze medals.

UST’s Daniel Villanueva won gold in the boys’ saber event after defeating University of the East’s Jesus Tolentino, 15-8.

Junior Tiger Fencer Christofer Sayco fell to Tolentino in the semifinal round, 10-15, for the bronze medal in the same division.

In the girls’ division, UST’s Allysah Catantan and Patricia Daradar crashed out of the semifinals of the foil division after losing to UE’s Maricar Matienzo and Samantha Catantan, respectively.

In men’s play, Tiger Fencer Dennis Gascon failed to advance to the semifinals of the epee category after succumbing to Ateneo de Manila University’s Jacob Villanueva while UE’s CJ Concepcion defeated UST’s Mark Echavez in the quarterfinal round of the saber event.

Lady Fencers Sherlyn Jose and Henesy Odulio crashed out of the quarterfinals of the foil category after losing to Ateneo’s Patricia Paulo and Maxine Esteban, respectively.

The individual events will continue tomorrow, 9 a.m., at the same venue.
