LADY FENCER Janna Catantan delivered the lone medal for UST in the seniors division of the UAAP Season 86 fencing tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion on Thursday, March 14.

Catantan settled for silver in the women’s saber after faltering against UE’s Queen Dalmacio, 15-7.

In women’s epee, Catantan failed to advance in the semifinals and placed sixth after succumbing to Lady Red Warrior Jaymi de los Santos, 15-9.

UST saber coach Donnie Navarro said the team’s opening performance yesterday was better than today.

“Mas maganda ‘yong performance ng team kahapon kasi meron kaming gold e, dalawa pa,” Navarro told the Varsitarian. “Ngayon, medyo na-pressure na rin ‘yong mga bata, kaya hindi sila naka-adjust kaagad.”

UST’s Marrke Abaygar failed to advance in the semifinals after finishing fifth in the men’s foil category. This was the sole event in men’s play.

In the girls’ division, sisters Krystal Tuy and Kathleen Tuy each clinched bronze in the saber category.

Ranzel Aberilla also took home the bronze medal in boys’ foil.

The UST Tiger Fencers will continue their Season 86 campaign at the same venue tomorrow, March 16, at 9 a.m.
