THE UST Tiger Fencers bagged two gold and five bronze medals on the opening day of the UAAP Season 86 fencing tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion on Thursday, March 14.

UST’s Daniel Villanueva topped the men’s saber category, while Adam Putian clinched the bronze medal in the men’s épée category.

“Sa men’s, ine-expect ko na talagang si Daniel ang makakakuha ng gold do’n,” saber coach Donnie Navarro told the Varsitarian.

“Ngayon, we’re just going to do light training and imo-motivate pa ‘yong mga bata para nasa kundisyon pa rin sila.”

Southeast Asian (SEA) Games medalist Janna Catantan delivered UST’s lone medal in the women’s division. She also scored bronze in women’s foil.

Meanwhile, Armand, the younger brother of Putian, and Christian Sarmiento took home the gold and bronze medals in the boys’ épée category. Gregorio Arce also bagged bronze in the boys’ saber.

In the girls’ division, Junior Lady Fencer Patricia Daradar placed third in the foil category.

The UST Tiger Fencers will continue their Season 86 campaign at the same venue tomorrow, March 15, at 9 a.m.
