THE UST Lady Fencers reaped one gold and two bronze medals while their male counterparts lost steam in Day 2 the UAAP Season 81 fencing tournament at the Victoria Sports Complex in Quezon City Friday.

UST’s Marielle Peralta struck gold after escaping University of the East’s Mickyle Bustos, 15-14, in the epee division finals.

Lady Fencer Mira Dorimon bagged bronze in the same category after crumbling to Bustos in the semifinals, 14-15.

UST’s Cherrie Mañago settled for bronze in the sabre category after absorbing an 8-15 loss against UE’s Allaine Cortey in the semifinals.

“Sa women’s nagkatalo lang sa lakas ng loob kasi hindi sila bumitaw for the medal,” UST epee coach Arman Bernal told the Varsitarian.

In men’s play, Tiger Fencers Fritz Azarcon and Elijah Rebusquillo bowed out early and failed to advance to the qualifiers of the foil division.

“Puro national team players kasi ang nakakalaban nila pero hindi pa naman tapos ang tournament kaya kaya pa nilang ayusin, ‘wag lang masyado magpabaya,” Bernal added.

In juniors’ action, Kim Tuy and Kristel Chacon won silver and bronze, respectively, in the girls’ sabre division.

Keziah Chua and Charlize Linantud also notched silver and bronze, respectively in the girls’ epee category.

The Lady Fencers wrapped up the individual category at second place with a 1-0-2 gold-silver-bronze medal tally while the Tiger Fencers remained winless and sank to fifth.

The team events will start tomorrow, 9 a.m., at the same venue. Ivan Ruiz L. Suing
