THE UST Tiger Softbelles pounded the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons in five innings, 8-1, in the UAAP Season 81 softball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Saturday.

Lyra Gustillo and Tanya Belaño wrapped things up for the Softbelles and activated the mercy rule after hitting two runs at the top of the fifth inning, 8-1.

UST’s Hannah de la Torre and Mharnie de la Cruz hammered two runs for UST at the top of the fourth inning to pull away for good, 6-1.

“Ang ginawa namin ngayon is pumalo lang nang pumalo (and good thing na) solid ang mga tama namin,” Softbelles head coach Sandy Barredo said.

UP scored their lone run at the bottom of the second inning after Cochise Diolata’s run-batted-in single sent Mary Suelto back to home plate, 1-0.

De la Torre, Charlotte Sales, Tin Palma and Lealyn Guevarra gave UST the lead after four conversions at the top of the third inning, 4-1.

The Softbelles tied the Lady Maroons and the De La Salle University at third place with a 3-3 win-loss card.

UST managed to get 12 hits while UP only had three.
