Athletic Karate Alliance (USTAKA) duo of Juby Ruiz and Alma Cabasal delivered sterling performances in the 2nd Westin Philippine Plaza Martial Arts Tournament last Nov. 14.

USTAKA president Ruiz dominated the 17-18 girls kata (forms) class, besting opponents that included teammate Cabasal, who finished second. On the other hand, Cabasal topped the 17-18 girls kumite (sparring) category, followed by Gilda Paola Fernandez of Nobilé Philippines Karate Club in second, and Ruiz in third.

USTAKA placed ninth overall against 22 teams composed of fitness institutions and sponsored teams, a respectable finish considering it fielded karatekas in only two events.

Footworx-Sta. Lucia emerged victor with 15 medals, while Footworx-Circle C was first runner-up with eight.

Collegiate teams that participated were University of the Philippines, De La Salle University Karate Team, Pasig Catholic College, and Ateneo de Manila University Athletic Karate Club.

The España-based Karatekas, mentored by head coach Ian Jereos and Darryl Perez, are hoping to land top honors in the upcoming inter-club and inter-collegiate tournaments lined up in January.
