COMING from back-to-back wins, the UST Tiger Cubs devoured Southville International School, 111-39, to stay undefeated in the Nike Summer League last May 19 at the Far Eastern University (FEU) gym.

It was an all-UST show in the entire game as both the Tiger Cubs’ offense and defense were in sync for a 17-3 opening salvo. Since then, UST did not bother to look back.

“Their (Tiger Cubs) advantage was speed, so we were able to dictate the tempo and shut our opponents out,” coach Allan Ascue told the Varsitarian.

True enough, UST’s full-court trapping defense worked on its favor as the España-based junior dribblers chocked Southville’s offensive sets, limiting them to only five points in the entire second quarter to end the half with a 53-17 bulge.

Midway in the third period, Southville posted a last stand with an 11-0 run, but UST’s offense was on a roll, immediately piling up six straight points to end the third with a 70-29 distance.

The Tiger Cubs hastened Southville’s downfall with a 12-0 endgame rally, including a lay-up each from new recruits Joseph Luna and Kyle Neypes, 3:34 minutes left.

UST’s Paulo Tan and Luna tallied for 34 points to lead the Tiger Cubs.

After a default win against Southridge International School last May 4, the Tiger Cubs banked on its fluid ball movement to dispose of Don Bosco Technical Institute, 79-47, last May 11 at the FEU gym.

The Tiger Cubs dished off 25 assists on top of their 49 rebounds to typify UST’s dominance. Mark Buendia paced the Tiger Cubs with 13 markers.
