12 July 2014, 5:22 p.m. – UST will begin its Season 77 campaign tomorrow with the Growling Tigers taking on the National University Bulldogs at 4 p.m. at the Big Dome, and the Tigresses facing defending champion La Salle at 3 p.m. at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Fr. Ermito De Sagon, Institute of of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) director, assured Thomasians that UST was fielding a strong lineup across all sporting competitions in its bid to regain the overall championship.

But he acknowledged a tough competition ahead with the other schools also beefing up their respective rosters.

“We always try to field our best players but unfortunately it is not as easy with other schools also having their own programs,” De Sagon said in an interview during the UAAP Season 77 Opening Ceremonies. “We will just do our best and that is all.”

De Sagon added that as long as the UST Tigers continue to play their best in their respective fields, there would be nothing to be ashamed of.

“You win some games and you lose some,” he said. “We will win graciously and we will lose with humility.”

The 77th season of the UAAP officially started Saturday with an astronomy-inspired opening ceremony at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. It’s the ninth time that UE is hosting the UAAP.

In her opening speech, UE Presdient Esther Albano Garcia encouraged the competing teams to embody “unity in excellence,” this year’s theme.

Garcia said all member schools should remain united despite the high level of competition.

Fielding UST best players was the school’s way of living by the theme, De Sagon said. P. K. A. Lintag
